Have you been busy prepping your home for winter?

Are you aware of all the problems that can happen with your roof during a snowstorm?

The last thing you need in the middle of winter is to find a leak in your attic, or somewhere else in your home. Ice dams are one of the most common problems people have with their roofs in the winter.

Do you want to learn more? Here at Coverall Roofing, the premier roofer in Clinton Township, our team of dedicated, knowledgeable professionals wants to make sure you have all the information you need at your fingertips.

Q: What is an ice dam?
A: Ice dams occur when there is a buildup of ice at the edge of your roof. When snow accumulates on the roof and the roof is heated enough to melt the snow, the snowmelt flows down to the gutters and eaves on the roof, and re-freezes (usually because of the cooler outside temperatures).

Q: What kind of damage can an ice dam do to my roof?
A: Ice dams most commonly can lead to leaks in the attic or upper floors of your home. Since the snowmelt can’t melt adequately off the roof, it has nowhere to go but inside your home.

Q: How can I keep ice dams from forming?
A: The most common causes for ice dams are found inside the structure of the home. The first cause is “bypass air”, or air that enters the attic from the inside of the home. The second cause is ventilation that is inadequate, which causes the roof to be warmer than the air outside the home. Ensuring that you have proper ventilation, insulation and no pre-existing leaks in your roof and attic is essential to keeping your home warm and dry in the winter.
