A first foremost for keeping your roof up to suffiicient standards is periodical inspection. Notice any "fly-off" missing, curling or damaged shingles? If so it's necessary to replace those to avoid any further damage to the roof's decking and also to prevent future leaks. Another thing to look for is algae or moss forming on the roof. An inexpensive trick to remove moss or algae is using a 50:50 solution of water and bleach, spraying at a low pressure to the affected areas and afterwords giving it a light rinse. This will kill the plants and successfully eliminate the problem of moss formation. An option to further prevent plant matter from forming on your roof is installing strips of metal zinc flashing (lead and copper can be used as well) at the roof's peak. Rain water will accumulate metal particles and inhibit any plant growth on your shingles. Have any nearby or overhanging trees near your roof? Trim those trees to dissipate branches, sticks and leaves accumulating and damaging your roof. This will not keep your gutters clean, but also reduce traffic of squirrels and other small animals as well as insects. To inlcude on roof maintnenance would be also visually inspecting flashing and mortar on your chimney and siding. Any cracked caulking can be chiseled with a putty knife and reapplied with a caulk-gun on places that need it. This prevents future water damage and weather deterioration. Brick work with loose or missing mortar and be easily fixed by filling the areas that are showing wear with new mortar and tuckpointing either with a tool or by hand. If you notice a leak in your roof it is best to fix it right away as it will only get worse as time goes on. The best option is to hire a professional for the job as roof leaks are often hard to determine and require many different techniques to determine the source of the leak itself as well as many methods to stop the leak and prevent it from occuring.
